We would like to show our appreciation to our current students with our new "Student Referral Program." Tell us the email addresses and names of people you have invited to enroll at Cole Institute of Language. When they enroll in a private lesson or course, you will receive a 10% discount off your next payment.
Welcome students! To show our appreciation, all students who sign up for additional private lessons within 30 days of their last lesson will receive a 10% discount off of their enrollment. Applies to private lessons / tutoring only.
You may already be noticing a few changes on the website. I want to assure you that once everything is set, and my good friend and web designer has tested everything, I'll be sending a newsletter with all the details.
The relaunch of the website should be finished by the end of the year. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions or comments, I'd be glad to hear them! Please write me at the address at the bottom of the page, or send them anonymously through the link below to the "brief survey."
Local construction and weather may interrupt services
In recent days, construction workers have been relocating utility lines and digging underground to make road improvements. In addition, the typical severe afternoon thunderstorms may cause temporary disruptions of electricity or internet connectivity. While no interruptions are anticipated, there could be possibilities of power or telephone service failure. This would affect all online classes. If you find that your teacher is not in the classroom after the first 10 minutes, rest assured that you will be credited for the course and the lesson will be rescheduled.
Remember to check here periodically for holiday or severe weather closings.
We are currently designing an online Spanish program for home-schooled students. At the present time, these will be divided into three enrollment groups: ages 8-10, ages 11-13, and ages 14-17. A low-cost textbook with CDs will be required for the upper age group in consideration of Carnegie Units. Your input is welcome. Please write us at shannoncole@coleinstitute.com with your comments or interest.
NEWSLETTER
Our newsletter will be delayed for an undetermined period of time, due to a major overhaul in the works for updating and "polishing" our image! You should have received all previous editions by email. In addition to sending our newsletter by email, you will be able to access previous editions here. Please send us any articles by email that you would like to publish!
RESCHEDULING
Students enrolled in public courses: Remember that you may not reschedule your classes. Instead, the class will be recorded, and you may review the information at a later date. Skype-based classes are not recorded.
Students enrolled in private lessons / tutoring:You may reschedule your class with a minimum of 24 hours notice. Depending on the number of lessons purchased, a "pardon" may be used to reschedule a lesson during each paid period with less than 24 hours notice (this is in consideration of cases of emergency). After your "pardons" are used, any other classes that are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will not be rescheduled nor credited to your account.
Access the online classroom at http://coleinstitute.e-lectazone.com and enter your user name and password. You may upload files to your folder to share in the session, or email these documents to your teacher before the lesson begins. Session recordings are normally deleted after two weeks. Skype-based lessons cannot be recorded and will not be archived in the eLecta classroom.
TROUBLESHOOTING AND SUPPORT
First time online student users can find information here.
TIPS:
1. To eliminate echo, please use a headset. Most echo in the session is caused by your microphone re-transmitting the sounds from your speaker. USB headsets tend to work best.
2. Use the audio wizard and your computer's audio settings to comfortably adjust the volume of your microphone and speakers in the virtual classroom.
3. You may send images from your video camera in the live session, and view your teacher. This can be helpful when the teacher is explaining a concept that requires a live visual (as in pronunciation).
4. If audio is severely delayed, cuts out often, or appears to be jittery, you can adjust the microphone buffer in "Audio Settings." Additionally, make sure your proper Internet connection speed is selected under File >> Connection Speed. Normal audio may be delayed in conversations up to two (2) seconds, so please pause briefly after making a question or comment in the class sessions.
5. The system does not run automatically on a Mac (you may wish to try Skype-based lessons, coming in September 2010). In order to enter the classroom on a Mac, read the information here.
6. If for some reason you or the program accidentally removes you from the classroom, simply rejoin the session from your user page. Likewise, if the teacher is accidentally removed (because of a power surge, internet disconnection, etc.), please wait a few minutes while he or she rejoins.
7. Skype is sometimes used as a backup or alternative service for our students. No audio will be recorded in the eLecta session if you choose this option. However, you may find programs online that will record Skype with your own computer. As of September 2010, Skype-based lessons are offered as an option. This will be of special interest to those with Macs and iPhones.
