GEORGIA LAW

Shannon Cole holds a Master's degree in Foreign Language Education, has taught for 12 years, and is certified by the state of Georgia to teach, among other subjects, Spanish for students in grades PreK - grade 12.

High School Beginning Spanish (for ages 14-17).

Textbook:  Spanish Now! Level 1 with CDs (7th edition) (ISBN: 9780764177743)

This textbook is very inexpensive, yet contains all the material of a traditional high school first year Spanish course, including an integrated workbook, audio CDs, and answers in the back for easy assessment by parents.

You can buy this textbook directly from the publisher:   http://www.barronseduc.com/0764177745.html or sometimes on Amazon.com:  http://www.amazon.com/Spanish-Now-Level-1-CDs/dp/0764177745

Important: Be sure you get the 7th edition with the Audio CDs.

Other recommendations:

* An agenda: (although not a requirement, you will find this is useful for keeping track of meeting dates, assignments, and projects.  It can also be used for your other classes.)  You can sometimes find these very cheap.  The one shown here was purchased at Dollar General for $2.

* A notebook and pen or pencil.  You may wish to make special notes from our online lessons.  Having a notebook and pencil with you can help you study and memorize key concepts.

* A good Spanish-English dictionary.  Do not get the $1 ones which have very few entries.  If money is a concern, you can find some useful online dictionaries for free.  My favorite inexpensive paperback dictionary is:  The University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary, Fifth Edition.  Sometimes available at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/University-Chicago-Spanish-English-Dictionary-Fifth/dp/0743470133

Class structure

The class will meet regularly twice a week in the virtual classroom for 40 minutes.  These sessions will be recorded for later review.  In addition, 3 hours and 10 minutes of directed assignments will be given each week.  We will provide a recommended study schedule for the week in order to meet the requirement of 180 days during the school term: usually students will work on an assignment 10 minutes after each 40-minute class session.  On the other three days of independent study, they should spend 50 minutes doing the prescribed activities.  In all, this provides a total of 250 minutes per week.  Over the 36-week period, this totals 9,000 minutes (150 hours), which is the widely accepted standard in issuing Carnegie Units.

The online segment will involve explanations from text activities, interactive presentations, and practice in conversation and listening.  Students will receive their directed offline assignments by email.  Most of these assignments will be from the textbook.  However, supplementary material from websites and special projects may be assigned (these will not incur any additional costs).

Middle School Beginning Spanish (for ages 11-13).

The middle school program will meet for 30 minutes, twice a week.  No textbook is required, although a notebook, agenda, and pen or pencil are recommended.  All material and assignments which require supplements will come from free websites.

How to convert the listed dates and times to your time zone:

At what time is my class meeting?

For detailed instructions, click here.  The dates and times are listed in U.S. Eastern Time (New York/Atlanta).  To see your specific class schedule, you may convert the date and time of your class schedule (listed as U.S.A. - GEORGIA - ATLANTA) under "convert from" with your location under "convert to."

NOTICE: Course schedules are subject to change (emergencies, illness, etc.).  By enrolling in a course, you agree to the terms of service and conditions of use.  Upon our reading the confirmation of your payment, you will have access to the class at the indicated times and dates.  Invoices must be paid within three days.

Late registration is allowed, but the cost of the program will not be pro-rated.  Although home school online courses are open to other home school students for enrollment during the course of the year, the teacher will continue the yearly plan as outlined in the program syllabus and school calendar.  It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian of the newly enrolled student to make sure the student is "caught up" to that point in the syllabus.
